atNight is designed to perform automated updates. It is able
to keep several backup generations and to alternate automatically
between full, differential and incremental backups, thus allowing
unattended operation for months. Optionally, files can be compressed
individually or saved into larger ZIP-archives. Backups can be
initiated by schedule, by command, or by device activation. A Restore View
provides a logical view across the different backup generations and
allows easy recovery and comparison of files. Since version 1.3
atNight also features a long term archive to keep even those
files that would fall out of regular backups. atNight is based on the
Eclipse Rich Client Platform.
atNight employs an elaborate exception handling which in effect
can even save files refused by some other backup utilities. Nevertheless,
if errors occur, error messages are collected in a log file, so that
unattended operation is even possible under difficult circumstances. And
when a backup destination is offline, atNight can automatically write
backups to a fallback destination, and synchronize when the regular
destination becomes available again.
